Sideboard from the School of Turin Carlo Mollino

About the Item

Early 1950s Italian sideboard, light oak wood frame composed of two side doors with related drawers a small central display case and a bar compartment . The tapered oak type and the slender, assertive style lead the object study to the Turin school and the father of self-design Carlo Mollino. Born in Turin, the only son of engineer Eugenio Mollino, he completed his studies, from primary to high school, at Collegio San Giuseppe. In 1925 he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering and, after a year, moved to the Regia Scuola Superiore di Architettura dell'Accademia Albertina in Turin, which later became the Faculty of Architecture of the Turin Polytechnic, where he graduated in July 1931. In addition to being an architect and designer, Mollino was also an aeroplane and racing car pilot, writer and photographer. An excellent skier, in 1942 he became a ski instructor and in the post-war period president of the CoScuMa (commission of schools and ski instructors) of the F.I.S.I., in 1951 he wrote the treatise Introduction to downhill skiing from the pages of which all his restless, imaginative, bizarre personality emerges. After publishing the volumes Architettura, arte e tecnica (Architecture, Art and Technique) in 1948, in 1953 he won the competition for full professor and obtained the chair of Architectural Composition, which he held until his death. In 1957, he participated in the organising committee of the 11th Milan Triennale. Mollino died suddenly in 1973, while still working, in his studio.
